A Conversation with the Maldives Sarah Mohamed.
Bumped into Sarah Mohamed because of a Facebook mistake, but got intrigued. Here is a young woman born and raised in the south atolls of the Maldives, beset on all sides by perfect, warm, beautiful surf.
She learned to surf, and as she learned the Secrets of the Sea and found her feet, she became very grateful to have been born and raised in the south atolls of the Maldives.
The waves beckoned to her, she responded and now she runs an annual surf contest and works for Blue Ocean Maldives, “an established company based in the heart of Maldives.”
Through the miracle of modern telecommunications, we asked Sarah about her life in south paradise: The waves, the culture, the visitors, her contest and what it’s like to be surrounded by all that perfect surf.
Where and when were you born?
I was born October 1991 in south Huvadhu atoll gdh Vaadhoo.
Okay Wikipedia has a little information on that: “Vaadhoo (Dhivehi: ވާދޫ) is one of the inhabited islands of Raa Atoll, Maldives. Total population of island was more than 500 in 2007. Vaadhoo is about 120 miles from Male. Vaadhoo island is famous for the “sea of stars” a marine bioluminescence generated by phytoplankton knows as dinoflagellates.
Oh wait, I don’t think that’s your island. There is another Vaadhoo?
Okay, here you are, according to Wikipedia: “Vaadhoo (Div: ވާދޫ) is one of the inhabited islands of Southern Huvadhu Atoll, in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll administrative division. Important Buddhist remains have been found on this island.
Blue Bowls is the surf spot on Vaadhoo. It is a favorite stop for boat charters in the Maldives.
Okay, now I see where you are. You live on an isolated atoll in the southern Maldives surrounded by blue ocean, nature and waves?
