Hawaiian Turmoil Threatens the Triple Crown
“First of all, I’d like to say (and the ASP are going to fine me) ‘cuz I don’t want to be a part of this dumb f***ing wannabe tennis tour. All these pro surfers want to be tennis players.”
- – Bobby Martinez, 2011
The World Surf League wants to change around their schedule, run the Pipe Masters in January instead of December and possibly start the WCT season with Pipeline, instead of end it at Pipe – a formula that has worked for many many years, and seemed to work pretty well.
The World Surf League has confronted the City and County of Honolulu and mayor Kirk Caldwell with a request to permit the Pipeline Masters for a January waiting period, starting in 2019 – those dates traditionally held by the Volcom Pipe Pro. The goal is to switch dates for the Sunset and Pipeline events – moving Sunset to December and Pipeline to January, and the change would start during the 2019 season, which means the Pipe Master would go from December 8 – 20 for 2018 – as it has for many years.
The new WSL Chief Executive Officer is Sophie Goldschmidt, a former tennis pro who was hired from London’s CSM Sport and Entertainment and has also held executive roles in the Rugby Football Union, National Basketball Association (NBA), Adidas and – perhaps true to Bobby Martinez’ bitter 2011 prophecy – Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
