It might be raining in Malibu and dumping at Mammoth, but winter is almost pau on the North Shore, after a long winter of odd weather, destructive swells, hair-tearing flat spells and drama in and out of the water.
Every year, Surfline teams up with O’Neill Inc, to nominate and pick the O’Neill Wave Of the Winter. Taking in video clips from professionals and amateurs and your Auntie Sue who just got lucky standing with her smartphone between Off the Wall and Backdoor, trying to film a whale breeching.
Dozens of nominees are whittled down to a Top 10 and then those clips are voted on by an all-star panel that includes Gerry Lopez, Shane Dorian, Shawn Briley and Pancho Sullivan.
According to the official website, Gerry Lopez said: “The picks are based on the wave, the ride as well as style and grace. The judges choose on what is important and impressive to them personally. So sometimes, like this year, with a lot of variables in play, it’s not easy.”
Below are the Top 10 Variables in Play. Which do you like best?
