15 Incredible Uses of Coconut Oil for Surfers

Coconut oil has become wildly popular in recent years as a healthy cooking alternative. But aside from its many culinary uses, the almighty oil has a wide array of alternative uses, many of which are perfect for surfers. Read on, and discover fifteen reasons coconut oil is a must have for your next surf trip.

Sunscreen. Coconut oil has a natural SPF of 4, meaning it blocks 75% of UV radiation and keeps you protected for roughly 45 minutes. Free from harmful chemicals and toxins found in traditional sunscreens, coconut oil is a cheap and healthy alternative. Just be sure to reapply frequently!

Bug Repellent. Trips to the tropics in search of pumping surf and turquoise waters often goes hand in hand with chemical-laden bug repellents and mosquito bites. Combine coconut oil with an essential oil such as rosemary or eucalyptus for an all-natural insect repellant.

Deodorant. Embracing an au natural look on a week-long surf trip is one thing, but walking around smelling like a backyard barnyard is another. Coconut oil is the ideal product for combatting body odor because it kills fungi, yeast, and bacteria and will keep you smelling fresh.

Cures Ear Infections. It’s a well-known fact that as surfers our ears take a beating from time to time. Whether it be a water-clogged ear or the infamous “surfer’s ear,” coconut oil can help. The fatty acids in coconut oil have been known to kill bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts and fungi. To cure an infected ear, simply fill a dropper with coco oil, lie on your side and have a buddy squirt a few drops into your ear.

Soothes Sunburns. Not only can coconut oil help prevent sunburns, it can also help soothe them, should you get one. The moisturizing effects of the oil can provide some relief to the area as well as help prevent peeling.

Sports Drink. Try adding a tablespoon of coconut oil to your water for a quick energy boost without the high sugar content of typical sports drinks. Coconut oil contains a unique form of saturated fat known as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s). MCT’s provide the body with energy, while simultaneously burning fat.

Coconut oil is a must-have on surf trips.
